White sand, a wooded headland. You cross the road, you are on it.
The water
The Pacific — beautiful, and sometimes rough. There can be a pull in the water. Swim with someone, not alone. Summer fills with tents; the rest of the year it is quieter — locals, a few boards.
IZU Peninsula
Izu is a UNESCO Global Geopark — undersea volcanoes, now green hills and a long coast. A car is the honest way to see it. Shimoda is ten minutes.
Irita & Tatado
The next beaches along this coast. Tatado holds swell; Irita likes a south wind.
Shimoda
A short drive. Harbour, Perry Road, the black ships — this is where Japan opened.
Cape Irozaki
The southern tip of the peninsula. Lighthouse, ocean, the Izu islands on a clear day.
Cape Tsumeki
A geosite on old volcanic rock. Narcissus in winter.
Waterfalls & onsen
Kawazu Nanadaru, Joren Falls. Hot springs in town and along the coast.
Tokyo to the sand
Train
JR to Atami or Ito, then the Izu-Kyuko line to Izukyu-Shimoda. About three to four hours from Tokyo.
From the station
Ten minutes by car, or a local bus toward Kisami and a short walk along the creek to the beach.
Car
The useful option if you want the rest of Izu. Free parking at the house.
